History

The Thottungal family can be traced back to nearly 400 years, or perhaps even beyond. The legend puts the origin of the family in a village called Palakkal from where a branch of the Vadekkethala brahmin family broke off and settled down in the area of the current village called Kandassankadavu, around 400 years ago.

That branch of the family embraced Christianity and came to be called as Vadekkethala Thottungal family. Somewhere in the course of time the word Vadekkethala got lost its importance and the family started to be known as just Thottungal . Now it is a known Roman Catholic family.

The village of Kandassankadavu became the abode of the family.

The family came to prominence through business deals with the British during the British -raj. It created land- lords and thus directing its interests to agriculture. Soon it had been seen that professionals of all the categories were springing up in the family. Though basically agriculturists even now, the family has produced a lot of professionals who are working around the globe in their respective fields.
